Researchers compared two Moroccan beaches and found that wave action and water movement play a big role in breaking down plastic trash into smaller microplastic pieces, rougher, wave-battered beaches showed more worn, degraded plastic than calm, sheltered ones. This matters because the more waves pound on plastic, the faster it fragments into the tiny particles that end up in seafood, drinking water, and eventually our bodies, meaning beach conditions themselves can speed up microplastic pollution entering the food chain.
