Tiny plastic particles called nanoplastics, the kind that break off from everyday plastic products, can stress out bacteria by damaging their outer membranes and causing harmful chemical reactions inside their cells, according to this study on E. coli. Since E. coli is a common bacteria found in our gut and environment, this research adds to growing evidence that the microplastics we're constantly exposed to (through food, water, and air) may have real biological effects worth understanding better, even though this particular study didn't test human cells directly.
