Design of a Remote-Controlled Trash Skimmer Boat Prototype for Waste Collection in Lakes

Abstract Waste pollution in open waters, particularly in lakes and coastal areas, has become a significant environmental issue that affects both ecosystems and human activities. Manual cleaning methods, which are still commonly used, are considered inefficient due to limited operational range and time constraints. This research aims to design a Remote-Controlled (RC) Trash Skimmer Boat prototype as a technical solution for collecting floating waste in confined water areas. The vessel is designed with a catamaran hull form to enhance stability and hydrodynamic efficiency in calm water conditions. The research methodology includes the design process of the vessel, covering the determination of main dimensions, the development of the lines plan, general arrangement, and 3D modelling. Additionally, the propulsion system and remote-controlled waste collection mechanism were designed and tested at prototype scale in a controlled environment (Danau Delapan ITS). The expected outcome of this study is an efficient, safe, and user-friendly waste collection vessel capable of reducing dependence on manual labor. This prototype is anticipated to serve as an initial step toward the development of semi-automated cleaning boats that support plastic pollution mitigation and promote cleaner aquatic environments.
