Summary

This Polish-language overview describes the global threat posed by micro- and nanoplastics, explaining how these particles accumulate in ecosystems, their biological effects on organisms from microbes to humans, and the urgency of developing effective regulatory and remediation responses.

Microplastics, like nanoplastics, despite their small size, pose a serious threat on a global scale due to their accumulation in increasing quantities in the environment. Due to the urgent need to take action, this topic has been growing in popularity in recent years and is increasingly being taken up by scientists. This article briefly presents the sources of microplastics, the potential threats to plants, animals and humans posed by microplastics, as well as the directions and goals of current scientific research undertaken by Polish scientists as part of projects financed by the National Science Centre.
