The plastic paradox: Resource efficiency, recycling imperative, and microplastic mitigation
Summary
Plastics are actually pretty efficient to make—using less water and energy than many alternative materials—but the real problem is what happens after we toss them out, since they can break down into microplastics that pollute our environment and end up in our bodies. This review argues that better recycling and "upcycling" technologies (turning old plastic into new, useful products) could let us keep plastic's practical benefits while cutting down on the pollution that's raising health concerns.
Plastics demonstrate superior energy efficiency compared to conventional materials, requiring significantly lower water and energy consumption during production. Their resilience, lightweight profile, and capacity for complex form-factor manufacturing make them ideal candidates for diverse industrial applications. However, these inherent benefits are increasingly overshadowed by the challenges of end-of-life management. Short-term use and subsequent disposal of plastics have led to persistent environmental pollution, necessitating a strategic shift toward a circular economy to realize the full potential of these materials. By integrating responsible design with efficient recycling and upcycling strategies, such as Vinomer™ and SaLSO™ technologies, the environmental footprint of plastics can be mitigated while retaining their functional advantages. Without this transition, unsustainable disposal practices will continue to compromise the manufacturing benefits of plastic materials.
