Evaluation and Control of Environmental Microbial Toxicity of Microplastics

Hosokawa Powder Technology Foundation ANNUAL REPORT 2026
Hiroyuki Shinto

Summary

Scientists tested how tiny plastic particles (nanoplastics) affect bacteria in water, and found that saltier water actually protects bacteria by preventing plastic particles from sticking to them and damaging their cell walls—while low-salt water made the damage much worse. They also found that actively growing bacteria were more vulnerable to harm than "resting" bacteria, showing that both water conditions and a microbe's life stage matter for how harmful microplastics can be. This matters because it helps explain when and where nanoplastic pollution poses the biggest risks to microbial ecosystems, which could eventually inform how we manage wa
