Inovasi Pengolahan Limbah Plastik Menjadi Paving Block Sebagai Solusi Permasalahan Lingkungan

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers implemented a three-stage training program teaching civil engineering students to convert plastic waste into paving blocks through collection, melting, and molding, achieving significant knowledge gains — 92% in basic waste concepts — while demonstrating that hands-on experiential learning can translate environmental awareness into practical construction skills.

Abstract: The management of plastic waste into paving blocks is a community service innovation that aims to reduce environmental pollution while producing useful construction products. This activity aims to increase the knowledge and skills of Civil Engineering students in managing plastic waste productively and sustainably. The implementation method consists of three stages, namely pre-activity, implementation, and evaluation. The pre-activity stage includes socialization, counseling, and a pre-test to assess students' initial knowledge related to waste management concepts, processing, types of plastics used, environmental benefits, and the utility and economic value of the product. The implementation stage consists of technical training in paving block manufacturing through the processes of collection, cleaning, melting, mixing, and molding. The evaluation stage was conducted through post-tests, product quality assessments, and learning reflections. The results showed a significant increase in understanding, with achievements of 92% in basic concepts, 84% in processing, 88% in product recognition, 76% in understanding benefits and sustainability, and 70% in interest in innovation development. This activity resulted in an increase in student competence and high-quality paving blocks.

Pemanfaatan Limbah Plastik Sebagai Bahan Subsitusi Agregat Dalam Pembuatan Paving Block

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers found that mixing recycled plastic waste (about 15% by weight) into paving blocks—the tiles used for sidewalks and driveways—actually made them stronger than blocks made without plastic, while higher amounts weakened them. This matters because it offers a practical way to reuse plastic waste in construction instead of letting it pile up in landfills or break down into microplastics that pollute soil, water, and eventually enter our food and bodies.

Utilization of Waste Plastic in Manufacturing of Paver Blocks: A Pilot Study of Solid Waste Management in Shaheed Benazirabad

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers in Shaheed Benazirabad, Pakistan made paving blocks from waste plastic (polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene) collected locally. Lab tests found these blocks were stronger, less water-absorbent, and cheaper to produce than standard concrete paving blocks, suggesting a possible way to reuse plastic waste.
