AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers review prospective directions in green chemistry, focusing on biodegradable polystyrene-based materials as replacements for conventional non-degradable plastics, and examine how recent Russian advances in sustainable materials science can contribute to solving pressing waste management and environmental pollution challenges.
Modern society faces numerous environmental challenges, with pollution being a prominent issue. The increasing volume of household waste, the use of non-degradable plastic materials, and their negative impact on the ecosystem require urgent and effective solutions. In recent years, the field of chemistry has been actively exploring ways to develop eco-friendly materials that can replace traditional polymers and reduce pollution. One particular focus has been on biodegradable plastic materials, particularly those based on polystyrene. The relevance of this work is not only due to the need to address the issue of waste management, but also to the pursuit of sustainable development, which involves the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. In 2023, Russia has witnessed significant advancements in the field of chemistry, aimed at creating safe and sustainable materials, opening up new horizons for scientific research. This work will explore how these advancements can contribute to solving pressing environmental challenges and how they influence the development of new approaches to waste management. In the first part of the work, we will provide an overview of the environmental pollution problem, which will allow us to understand the scale and consequences of this situation. We will then discuss current research trends in the field of eco-friendly materials, focusing on innovative developments that have already been introduced into the industry. In particular, we will explore biodegradable plastic materials based on polystyrene, their properties, and their advantages over traditional polymers. The next section will focus on analyzing the impact of these new developments on waste management. We will explore how the introduction of eco-friendly materials can change the way we approach recycling and waste management, and the benefits it can bring to the environment. An important aspect of our work will be to discuss the environmental advantages of biodegradable materials, including their impact on reducing pollution and improving ecosystems. In the final part of the work, the prospects for the development of research in the field of sustainable chemistry will be discussed, and recommendations for the further development of environmentally friendly technologies will be proposed. We hope that the results of our research will help not only in the scientific community, but also in practical applications, contributing to a safer and more sustainable future for our planet. Thus, this work aims to explore and analyze promising areas in the field of chemistry, focusing on the development of environmentally friendly materials and their significance for environmental protection. We are confident that the results of our research will contribute to a deeper understanding of current issues and their solutions in the context of sustainable development.

Bio-degradable polymers through green chemistry: advances, applications, and future perspectives
AI summary Read the abstract
This review paper rounds up recent research on making plastics that break down naturally, using cleaner and safer manufacturing methods instead of harsh chemicals and fossil fuels. This matters because everyday plastics that don't degrade are piling up in landfills and oceans, breaking into microplastics that end up in our food, water, and even our bodies — switching to truly biodegradable materials for packaging, medical devices, and consumer products could help cut down that exposure over time. The paper notes that cost and durability challenges still need to be solved before these greener plastics can fully replace conventional ones.

This study characterized emerging microplastic contaminants in the Saigon River, Vietnam, using a bilingual approach to communicate findings to both Vietnamese and international audiences. Microplastic concentrations were among the highest reported for Southeast Asian river systems, reflecting Vietnam's status as a major plastic producer with limited waste management infrastructure.
Plastics of the Future? The Impact of Biodegradable Polymers on the Environment
AI summary Read the abstract
Biodegradable polymers are increasingly proposed as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics, but their actual degradation rates and ecological impacts under real environmental conditions vary widely and are often misrepresented. Without rigorous standards for biodegradability claims, some alternatives may simply generate a different form of microplastic pollution rather than solving the underlying problem.
