Turkish review of microplastic contamination across the food chain with public health implications

AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers reviewed the formation, human exposure pathways, and environmental and health effects of microplastics, finding evidence of their presence in water sources, aquatic organisms, and food products, and emphasizing that oral ingestion and skin contact are primary routes of human exposure while highlighting sustainable fisheries as part of the solution to plastic pollution.

Researchers reviewed microplastic contamination in key gastronomy-sector food staples in Turkey — including drinking water, seafood, honey, sugar, and salt — finding microplastics present across all categories and highlighting food safety risks throughout plastic use in food preparation, packaging, distribution, and consumption.
Nano- ve Mikroplastik’lerin İnsan Sağlığı ve Ekosistem Üzerindeki Olası Etkileri
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers reviewed current evidence on nano- and microplastics as emerging global pollutants, noting that while chronic high-dose exposure via food and air is unlikely to cause severe acute toxicity, the potential long-term effects of microplastics carrying pathogens and toxic chemicals remain poorly understood.
Discovery and solution for microplastics: New risk carriers in food
AI summary Read the abstract
This review summarizes the current state of microplastic contamination in food, covering which foods are affected, how to detect microplastics, and how to break them down. Microplastics accumulate through the food chain and have been confirmed in many everyday foods, posing serious health risks. The authors call for standardized detection methods and national policies to monitor and reduce microplastic contamination in the food supply.
Microplastics as Emerging Food Contaminants: A Challenge for Food Safety
AI summary Read the abstract
This review examines microplastics as an emerging contaminant in the food supply, covering how they enter the food chain, their characteristics, and the challenges of assessing their health risks. Researchers found that while microplastics have been detected in a wide range of food products, current scientific data is insufficient to complete a thorough risk assessment of dietary exposure. The study calls for standardized detection methods and more research to establish safe exposure thresholds for microplastics in food.
