AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers sampled water at three depths and 12 stations in Colombia's Betania Reservoir during high and low water seasons, finding higher microplastic abundance during low water, a decreasing gradient with depth, and greater concentrations near populated areas, with fragments and fibers as the dominant particle types.

Researchers investigated microplastic contamination in coastal sediments across supralittoral, mesolittoral, and infralittoral zones in the Atlántico department of Colombia, characterizing particles by size, shape, and polymer composition to assess long-term environmental risk, with the study aimed at providing baseline data for microplastic management in this understudied Caribbean region.
Impacto De Los Microplásticos En Macroinvertebrados De Ecosistemas Dulceacuícolas En Colombia: Una Revisión De Literatura De La Última Década
AI summary Read the abstract
This review compiled 10 years of scientific literature on microplastic impacts on freshwater macroinvertebrates in Colombia, finding that despite the environmental importance of these organisms, MP research in Colombian freshwater systems is scarce compared to marine studies. The review called for expanded monitoring and experimental research on MP effects in Colombian rivers and lakes.
Determination of microplastics (4.75 mm to 0.315 mm) in Timiza Lake in the city of Bogotá D.C.
AI summary Read the abstract
This study determined microplastic concentrations (0.315–4.75 mm) in surface water samples from Timiza Lake in Bogotá, Colombia, using a standardized protocol developed from national and international methodologies. The research also included microbiological and physicochemical characterization of the water body alongside the microplastic quantification.

Researchers conducted the first microplastics study in the lower Rímac River basin in Lima, Peru, finding a dramatic increase from 97 particles in November 2017 to 2,982 particles in August 2018, with fragments, films, filaments, and spherules present — raising concern given the river is the primary water source for metropolitan Lima.
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers assessed the spatiotemporal influence of environmental variables on microplastic abundance and distribution in the surface waters of Tumaco Bay, Colombian Pacific, during wet and dry seasons in 2020. Microplastic abundance was higher in the dry season (11.40 items/m3) and the inner estuary (8.42 items/m3), fibers were dominant (53.89%), and salinity and total dissolved solids were significantly correlated with fiber concentrations.
