Design and Environmental Engineering as tools for reusing and repurposing PET and glass bottles
Summary
This bibliometric study found that only 0.1% of selected academic literature integrates design, environmental engineering, and sustainability in the context of PET and glass bottle reuse, highlighting a significant research gap and proposing new product alternatives to promote circular economy practices in the municipality of Paragominas, Brazil.
The improper disposal of pet and glass bottles is a problem for environmental sustainability from design and environmental engineering. The gap found indicates a small amount of academic publications on this topic. The objective of this research was to identify the number of them between 2021 and 2025. The method used was an action investigation. The data obtained indicated that the publications of the triad design – environmental engineering – sustainability, the published researches were in 25%, with 0.1% publications due to the quantity of selected literature: 2,507. In individual data, the association between reuse, reuse or reuse, design, and environmental engineering, with 19.1%, and 1.1% depending on the selected literature. Separately, the term design (49.8%) was lower than the associated terms and the triad cited. The application of the triad in research in the reuse, reuse and reuse of PET and glass bottles is not yet in the context of the two higher education courses listed in this research: Bachelor’s degree in design and environmental engineering. It was also found that the application of technological innovation with the 3D printer is scarcely mentioned in the selected literature. To improve this relationship, two alternatives of new aggregated products are proposed, to mitigate such evidence, especially in the municipality of Paragominas and, in this way, contribute even more to the return of the group of green municipalities.
