AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers conducted the first microplastic assessment at two Havana coastal beaches (Cojímar and Bacuranao), Cuba, using the REMARCO sampling protocol and measuring microplastic densities between 0.00003748 and 0.00025096 g/cm³, establishing a baseline for future monitoring of these ecologically and economically important sites.

Assessment of microplastics particles (0.3–5 mm) in sandy beaches of Cuba
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers conducted the first assessment of microplastic pollution on sandy beaches in Cuba, sampling four beaches with different characteristics on the island's north and south coasts. They found microplastics at three of four sites, with the highest abundance of 95 particles per square meter at a beach inside Cienfuegos Bay. Polyethylene was the most common polymer, followed by polypropylene and polystyrene, with fragments being the dominant shape.

Researchers conducted the first characterization of plastic pollution in sediments at Güibia Beach in the Dominican Republic, a sea turtle nesting site, finding an average of 79.6 plastic items per kilogram of dry sediment, with 54.27% microplastics dominated by foam particles linked to food consumption and fishing activities.

Researchers evaluated microplastic presence at San Mateo Beach in Manabí, Ecuador using density separation and stereomicroscopy across 100 sand samples from five sites, finding an average of 12.5 ± 10.3 items/kg with fibers comprising 63% of particles, attributing contamination primarily to local anthropogenic activities at this heavily visited coastal site.
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers surveyed macro-, meso-, and microplastic contamination in beach sediments at San Luis, Venezuela, finding predominantly plastic debris linked to food sales and consumption, with fragments and fibers reflecting degradation of litter and fishing activity, and preferential accumulation toward more urbanized areas driven by coastal dynamics.
