The textile and apparel industry has historically depended on offshore manufacturing to capitalize on lower labor costs and expanded global supply chains. However, recent disruptions including pandemic-related logistics breakdowns, rising labor costs overseas, and geopolitical tensions have prompted renewed interest in domestic production, particularly in the United States. Concurrently, rapid advances in digital technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, digital twin modeling, additive manufacturing, and Internet of Things (IoT) integration are transforming how textiles are designed, manufactured, and distributed. These technologies offer a compelling foundation for reshoring, making it increasingly viable to manufacture competitively within the U.S. This paper examines the impact of digital transformation on reshoring opportunities in the textile and apparel sector. Drawing on industry case studies, interviews with manufacturing leaders, and a comparative analysis of production metrics, we demonstrate how digital tools can offset traditional cost disadvantages by reducing reliance on manual labor, accelerating time-to-market, and enabling demand-responsive production. Our findings suggest that reshoring, supported by smart manufacturing infrastructure, can lead to improved sustainability, product customization, and operational agility. The study also identifies key challenges, such as upfront capital investment, workforce reskilling, and infrastructure gaps, while offering policy and industry recommendations to overcome them. By framing digital technology not only as a productivity enhancer but also as a strategic enabler of economic localization, this research highlights a viable pathway for revitalizing the U.S. textile and apparel industry through technology-driven reshoring.
