Microplastic pollution in Vietnamese beaches : the role of environmental and biological processes with a focus on the benthos

AI summary Read the abstract

This thesis conducted the first comprehensive standardized assessment of microplastic pollution on Vietnamese beaches, finding microplastics at all sites including relatively pristine locations, with benthic community composition correlated with microplastic presence, and edible species like razor clams and crabs actively ingesting particles. These findings establish Vietnam's coastline as significantly contaminated and document microplastic entry into seafood supply chains, with implications for human dietary exposure.

The invisible invasion: the study of microplastics dynamics and biological interactions in marine benthos

AI summary Read the abstract

This Dutch-language dissertation examines microplastic distribution and behavior in marine benthic environments, exploring interactions with sediment characteristics and fauna including bioturbation effects. The work highlights methodological challenges in detecting small microplastics and calls for standardized protocols to advance marine sediment microplastic research.

Coastal and marine plastic debris in Vietnam: Assessing the impacts on Ecosystems, Human health, and Infrastructure

AI summary Read the abstract

Vietnam contributes an estimated 730,000 metric tons of mismanaged plastic waste annually to marine environments, with microplastic concentrations documented in seafood, sediments, and coastal waters posing risks to human health and coastal infrastructure alike. This review calls for comprehensive national policy responses addressing both ecological and engineering impacts of plastic contamination in one of Asia's most plastic-polluted coastal nations.

Plastic waste in sandy beaches and surface water in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam: abundance, characterization, and sources

AI summary Read the abstract

Plastic waste surveys on three major beaches in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam documented abundant marine debris including microplastics, with quantities reflecting nearby anthropogenic activities and waste management gaps. The findings provide a baseline for coastal management and pollution control in the region.

Characteristics of Microplastics in Sediment at Danang Beaches - Vietnam

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers characterised microplastics in beach sediments at Danang, Vietnam, determining their abundance, morphology, colour, and polymer composition. The study found microplastic contamination at all sampled sites, identifying fibres and fragments as dominant forms and linking plastic sources to local tourism, fishing, and urban runoff.

Characterization of microplastic pollution in coastal sediments of Vietnam

AI summary Read the abstract

A systematic review of Vietnamese coastal sediment studies from 2020–2024 found microplastic concentrations ranging from near zero to 29,232 particles per kilogram, with polyamide, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene as dominant polymer types, but with significant methodological inconsistency across studies. Standardizing detection and reporting protocols is urgently needed so that regional data can be aggregated into global models of microplastic accumulation and human dietary exposure through seafood.
