Abstract Using new design of the laser tube, a reliable compact three-wavelength laser source operating at the 510.6-, 578.2 and 627.8-nm laser lines, which is based on gold and copper vapor lasers, is developed, studied and applied for the first time in assessment of water pollution with microplastics. Utilizing the same laser tube, optimal discharge conditions are found for a four-wavelength laser operation adding laser oscillation at the 312.2-nm laser line. Applying nonlinear frequency conversion and adding iron and lead as sources of the active particles to the gold and copper, laser oscillation is also obtained at nine additional lines.
