Summary

Researchers demonstrated that silicon antenna-coupled terahertz field-effect transistor arrays can perform video-rate (25 fps) digital imaging and multi-spectral imaging in transmission mode, with potential applications in non-destructive detection of contaminants including microplastics in materials.

The suitability of silicon antenna-coupled terahertz field-effect transistor (TeraFETs) array for video-rate digital imaging and multi-spectral imaging is demonstrated in a transmission fashion. The silicon imaging chip contains a digital TeraFET detector array and experimentally performs 25 fps video-rate images using the hollowed-out aluminum mental boards. Using a chopped tunable terahertz wave source, the last-column TeraFETs with a set of discrete frequencies are applied in raster-scan spectral imaging and obtain the spatial distribution of spectral transmission properties in the samples, offering an elegant solution for identifying microplastic materials packed in a container. Our report allows for optimizing compact and cost-effective noninvasive inspection applications with high frame rates combined with spectroscopic analysis.
