Summary

The D4RUNOFF project validated a multi-module online monitoring system capable of detecting microplastics below 50 micrometers, zinc, nickel, tire-derived 6PPD-quinone, and pesticide triazines in stormwater runoff in real time. This integrated sensing technology is a major advance for monitoring co-occurring plastic and chemical pollutants in urban runoff, a key pathway for microplastic entry into aquatic environments.

Deliverable 2.6 describes the performance of the fully operational monitoring system developed in D4RUNOFF-WP2 in the laboratory. Three modules were analyzed: 1) the electrochemical module for zinc and nickel detection; 2) the Raman module for the identification and size discrimination of small microplastics (below 50 micrometers); and 3) inlet preconcentration of 6PPD-quinone and triazines using mini COF-containing solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges. Their performance was evaluated against well-established analytical techniques: ICP-OES for metals, PyGC-MS for microplastics, and LC-MS/MS for 6PPD-Quinone and triazines. The data generated during this lab validation is compiled here.
