Applications in Sustainable Fashion
Summary
Researchers reviewed the application of hydrogel and aerogel technologies in sustainable fashion, examining how these materials can address environmental concerns including microplastic pollution, excessive water use, and non-biodegradable waste while enabling closed-loop production models and advanced functions such as energy-harvesting footwear.
In this chapter, the innovative role of hydrogel and aerogel technologies in enabling sustainable innovation in the fashion sector is examined. It demonstrates how newer materials address pressing environmental concerns, including excessive water usage, microplastic pollution, and the nonbiodegradable disposal of accessories and garments from conventional materials. Hydrogels provide self-regulating temperature and moisture control, and aerogels provide ultralight insulation, strength, and multifunctionality. The chapter discusses their uses in eco-fashion clothing, biodegradable fashion accessories, sustainable sportswear, and recyclable shoes. The focus is on closed-loop production, energy-efficient production, and future applications such as energy-harvesting shoes and bio-intelligent materials. These technologies integrate with circular fashion models, redefining the aesthetic and functional standards in sustainable fashion design. Despite technical and regulatory hurdles, the interplay among research, innovation, and policy can facilitate mass adoption and transform fashion into a regenerative force.
