Summary

Nickel specimens with a range of grain sizes were tested to characterize pre-yield microstrain behavior, revealing three distinct deformation stages in the highest-purity samples. The results suggest that the formation of early polygonization cells during microstraining determines the cell size observed after full plastic deformation.

Abstract The pre-yield microstrain behaviour of nickel having grain sizes ranging from 0·018 to 0·44 mm has been studied at 298°K. Calculations, based on observations that microstrain proceeds by three stages in the highest purity samples, suggest that the formation of an "incipient glide polygonization cell" in the microstrain region determines the cell size observed after macrodeformation.
