This paper presents a theoretical framework describing microplastic and preplastic deformation in materials as resulting from thermally activated motion of a low density of mobile dislocations. The theory relates dislocation density, activation volume, and stress-strain curve slope, proposing stress relaxation experiments as a measurement approach.

Abstract Preplasticity and the theory of thermally-actived phenomena The microplastic and preplastic behaviour of materials is described as resulting from the thermally-actived motion of a low density of mobile dislocations. The slope of the stress—strain curve is related to the rate of production of mobile dislocations, the temperature dependence of which is given by the theory of thermally-activated phenomena. Both activation volumes and mobile dislocation densities can be measured by stress relaxation techniques involving exhaustion processes. These quantities are simply related to the slope of the stress-strain curve.

This study unified the analysis of microplastic deformation kinetics in metals by connecting the plastic potential — a thermodynamic quantity — directly to the observable microplastic strain events that precede macroscopic yielding. Development of a Theory of Micro-Deformation Sensitive to Strain Rate and Temperature

AI summary Read the abstract

This Ukrainian theoretical study developed a generalized theory of microstrain that accounts for both strain rate sensitivity and temperature effects, applicable to describing finite viscoplastic deformation over a wide range of loading conditions. Such theoretical frameworks underpin computational models used to predict how engineering materials deform under complex loading histories.
