Explore opportunities for managing natural resources and a better life for all 1 Welcome Dear participants of the Tropentag 2024 conference, Tropentag is Europe's largest trans-and interdisciplinary conference focusing on research in tropical and subtropical agriculture, natural resource management, and rural development.Bringing together experts from over 77 nations is a crucial platform for discussing global challenges. The theme of Tropentag 2024, 'Explore opportunities for managing natural resources and a better life for all', is not just a theme but a call to action. It urges us to come together and explore sustainable solutions for managing natural resources and improving lives. After 2016, BOKU University, in cooperation with the Council for Tropical and Subtropical Research (ATSAF e.V.), Tropentag 2024 will host you on the BOKU Trkenschanze campus in Viennas 19 th district. This year's conference will address the transformation of agriculture and food systems, climate change adaptation, environmental conservation, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Additionally, it will focus on social and technological innovations and gender-based inequalities in natural resource management.Over 70 sessions and in addition, 30 workshops will focus on a range of critical topics, including agroecology and sustainable resource management practices, livestock management and human well-being, food systems for sustainable diets and health, sustainable water and fisheries management, climate change adaptation and resilience, forestry, environmental conservation, and ecosystem services.Additionally, gender and intersectional perspectives in the governance of natural resources, the multiple crises involving political, institutional, and economic structures and challenges, and social and technological innovations for implementing the SDGs will be critical this year.We are excited to present almost 500 oral and poster presentations from young scientists and seasoned experts, global and inspirational keynote speakers, and several side events designed to foster rich dialogue and collaboration. We sincerely thank all participants, speakers, and organizers, especially our colleagues and students at ATSAF and BOKU University.Your contributions are vital to the success of this conference and our shared mission for a sustainable future.

Sustainable Management of Land Resources: The Case of China’s Forestry Carbon Sink Mechanism
Researchers used a difference-in-differences model on 30 Chinese provincial-level regions from 2005 to 2020 to evaluate which forestry carbon sink mechanism (FCSM) policies most effectively generated socioeconomic value, finding that China's forest carbon policies have underutilized potential for meeting carbon neutrality goals.
Stability of organic carbon pools and sequestration potential as affected under different agroforestry systems
This study evaluates how five different agroforestry systems affect soil organic carbon stability and sequestration in degraded Himalayan soils in northeast India. It is not about microplastics and is a false positive for microplastic relevance.
Sustainability Through Bio-Agriculture: Carbon Dioxide Reduction (CDR) Plus Biodiversity Recovery
Researchers examined bio-agriculture approaches for simultaneous carbon dioxide reduction and biodiversity recovery, arguing that technological carbon capture strategies often overlook the parallel biodiversity crisis and proposing integrated agricultural solutions.
Impact of elevated environmental pollutants on carbon storage in mangrove wetlands: A comprehensive review
Researchers synthesized global studies on pollutant impacts in mangrove wetlands — which store about 10% of coastal ocean carbon — finding that microplastics reduce carbon stocks by 1-12% by impairing photosynthesis and destabilizing sediments, while heavy metals and oil spills compound the damage to these critical climate carbon sinks.
Local Institutions Performance in Mangrove Forest Management on Small Islands: Case Study in Buano Island, Maluku Province, Indonesia
This is not about microplastics — it is an environmental governance study analyzing the performance of local community institutions in managing mangrove forests on Buano Island in Maluku, Indonesia.
