This paper analyzed controversial aspects of chemistry's contributions to the world, from the Haber-Bosch process and pesticides to the ozone hole, global warming, and the presence of plastics and microplastics as environmental contaminants. The author explored the tension between pessimism about chemical pollution and optimism about chemistry's problem-solving potential.
ARTIGOS! Between the Fascination with Pessimism and the Faltering Before Optimism -In the present work, some aspects of (supposedly) controversial contributions of chemistry to our world, as well as dilemmas raised by this science, are analyzed.From classical Haber and Bosch's synthetic fertilizers to the ozone hole and global warming, passing on the use of pesticides and the presence of plastics and microplastics in the compounds and materials will also be discussed.
