Spatial and Temporal Distribution and Abundance Microplastics in Lake Champlain Long-Term Monitoring Samples
Summary
Long-term monitoring of Lake Champlain found microplastics throughout the lake, with fibers making up the majority of particles and higher concentrations near industrial centers — providing one of the early longitudinal datasets on microplastic abundance and distribution in a major North American freshwater system.
A) 2012 (n = 1820 nurdles) Of the total 249 microplastics found, 201 were FIBERS 3,455 nurdles (n = 2265) samples To quantify the abundance and map the spatial distribution of microplastics and nurdles in long-term monitoring samples. Density of microplastics and nurdles will be higher adjacent to industrial centers. The majority of microplastics will be of the fiber type.
