Summary

Researchers analyzed microplastics collected from Lake Biwa and Osaka Bay in Japan for the presence of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), finding that smaller microplastic particles tended to carry higher concentrations of these toxic chemicals. The results suggest that hydrophobic adsorption drives contaminant uptake, raising concerns about microplastics acting as vectors for hazardous pollutants.
