An experiment of microplastics sampling conducted by Japan Coast Guard.
Summary
Japan Coast Guard conducted a feasibility study for microplastic monitoring using its survey vessel, successfully collecting samples at 12 points in the East China Sea and Pacific Ocean with existing personnel and equipment. The study demonstrates that national coast guard resources can be adapted for routine microplastic surveillance without specialized research vessels.
Currently, the microplastics problem is recognised as a global challenge, which we need to take actions to solve. In light of this situation, the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) has started to investigate the feasibility of microplastics monitoring using its survey vessel. We conducted a trial sampling of microplastics as the first step of a feasibility study and were able to collect microplastics samples at twelve points in the East China Sea and Pacific Ocean with personnel and equipment that the JCG currently possesses.
