Summary
This study investigated whether microplastics affect the feeding efficiency and mucus trap integrity of larvaceans (Oikopleura dioica), gelatinous zooplankton that play an important role in carbon export from the ocean surface. Results showed that microplastic exposure caused larvaceans to abandon their feeding structures more frequently, potentially reducing carbon flux to depth and contributing to altered carbon cycling in microplastic-contaminated surface waters.
