Summary

This Indonesian study investigated microplastic occurrence in filter-feeding animals (bivalves and other taxa) collected from seagrass beds in the Spermonde Archipelago near Makassar. Filter feeders in seagrass ecosystems are found to contain microplastics, raising concerns about both ecosystem health and seafood safety in this biodiverse Indonesian coastal environment.

KUASA SARI. L111 13 012. Occurrence of microplastic in filter feeder animal on seagrass in at Spermonde Archipelago Makassar. Supervised by Dr. Ir. Muhammad Farid Samawi, M.Si as first supervise and Prof. Dr. Akbar Tahir, M.Sc as second Supervise. Microplastic is a very threatening problem for the biota in the ocean, biota filter feeder serves to circulate water in the main waters in the ecosystem of seagrass. The Research was conducted in October until December 2017 aimed to know the quantity and the type of microplastic in filter feeder animal at Spermonde Archipelago Makassar. Animal sampling was conducted at seagrass area by using transect method with area 10 x 10 square meters and divison plot 1 x 1 meters for collecting of data seagrass cover as much 5 division and microplastic observation done by visual observation method. The result shows that the amount of filter feeder animal found is 22 individuals as many as from 7 species and 1 undentified species such as Pinna sp, Pinna muricata, Pinna nobilis, Malleus sp, Anadara sp. Atrina vexillum, Pinctada sp. and unidentified species. The reasearch result that microplastic found in filter feeder animal in Kodingareng Lompo Island is much as 2 particels, in Bonetambung Island is much as 3 particels, and in Langkai Island is much as 2 particels. The type of microplastic in filter feeder animal is fiber or filament (shaped sheet). The average of microplastic abudance found in Kodingareng Lompo Island is 0,08 MP/Ind, in Bonetambung Island around 0,25 MP/Ind, and the average microplastic in Langkai Island is 0,125 MP/Ind. Based on correlation test conducted there is no relationship between microplastic abudance with seagrass cover. Keyword: quantity and type of microplastic, Filter feeder animal, seagrass cover
