Microplastics and its Impact on Oceanic Environment

Research & Reviews: A Journal of Biotechnology 2018
Karri Mohit Reddy

Summary

This review examines the impact of microplastics on oceanic ecosystems, covering the mechanisms by which they harm aquatic life through ingestion and entanglement, and discusses potential strategies for reducing contamination. It emphasizes that continuous plastic production combined with poor waste management is driving an escalating ocean pollution crisis.

Continuous increase in plastic consumption and poor management in dealing with its waste has led us to dispose huge amount of wastes into aquatic systems. Microplastics are the one with a size less than 5 mm; there are many ways in which microplastics can be generated. Microplastics can cause severe health issues to aquatic life through mechanisms such as entanglement and ingestion. This paper present study of documents examined on various fishes and also presents the need for policy making by regulatory agencies.
