Mi̇kroplasti̇kler: Hayati Kuşatan Yeni̇ Tehli̇ke
Summary
This Turkish review introduces microplastics as a new environmental threat, describing their sources, persistence, and the growing health risks they pose to all living organisms including humans. It notes that microplastics are now considered markers of human environmental impact equivalent to a new geological epoch.
It is no exaggeration to say that we have experienced Plastic Age. Because of the development of chemistry and materials science, many kinds of plastics have entered our lives. These are difficult pollutants to filter and protect. In this respect microplastics are a new indicator that today people are growing plastic footprints, which is becoming a risk for overall living health and sustainable environment. A wide range of products such as personal care products, shampoos, detergents, toothpastes, textiles, bags, shoes, tires, foodstuffs contain microplastics in their composition and emit microparticles in the air, water and environment depending on their use. Plants, land and sea creatures and people eat, drink, breathe these very small plastic particles. A widespread and high awareness should be searched firstly as microplastics, resources and effects that must be taken seriously, and as pollutants spreading and widespread. Information, awareness, incentives, direction and legal measures to reduce our plastic footprint should be put into action quickly. Otherwise, there will inevitably increase environmental problems based on increasing new health problems, genetic diseases, decrease in success, motivation and satisfaction, increase in criminal cases, air, water and soil quality.
