미세플라스틱은 해양생태계를 위협하고, 인간의 건강피해를 유발한다. 국내 해안의 미세플라스틱 오염도는 외국보다 매우 높은 수준이다. 해외에서는 미세플라스틱과 관련된 제품들을 규제하는 법안이 도입되었고, 미세플라스틱을 독성물질 항목으로 추가했다. 그러나 한국은 2017년부터 생활용품의 일부분에 한해서만 규제를 시작한다. 또한 미세플라스틱으로 인한 해양오염 연구가 부족하다. 본 논문에서는 국내외 미세플라스틱 관련 정책의 현황과 문제점을 분석하여 미세플라스틱의 규제, 영향, 배출원에 대한 연구 확대, 체계적인 모니터링 구축과 교육여건 개선, 예치금 제도의 방향 제시와 재활용 의무율 확대의 방안을 제시한다.
