Summary
This methods paper describes analytical approaches for detecting and characterizing micro- and nanoplastic particles in soil samples using chemical separation, FTIR microscopy, and X-ray spectroscopy. Reliable soil microplastic analysis methods are urgently needed given that agricultural soils are a major but understudied reservoir for plastic contamination.
MP and NP particles in soils can be analyzed by wet chemical sample preparation, FTIR microscopy and STXM to investigate their occurrence and fate in the environment.
