Summary

Researchers proposed adapting standard granulometric analysis methods to quantify microplastic pollution in beach and bottom sediments in coastal marine zones, using sieve-based particle size analysis adapted to account for plastic particle presence. The method is being validated to improve standardization of microplastic monitoring in coastal sediments.

Study Type Environmental

A new approach to the assessment of microplastic pollution of beach and bottom sediments of the coastal zone of the sea based on the study of their particle size distribution is proposed. A standard procedure for carrying out a complete granulometric analysis of the sediments in laboratory conditions is described. It uses the sieve method with and without washing with water adapted to the condition of their possible contamination with microplastics. Currently, this method is receiving practical approval during which the methods of processing beach and bottom sediments will be worked out and improved.
