Nanotechnology is an important key enabling technology that underpins developments in many sectors leading to fast product innovation, e.g. to enhance properties, reduce consumption of materials, alleviate waste, and help the environment. This requires that regulatory frameworks are rapidly adapted to new challenges. This report gives global perspectives on nanotechnology and nanoplastics summarising the discussions and conclusions drawn by almost 200 scientists representing regulatory agencies, academia and industry from 36 countries around the world, at the 2019 Global Summit on Regulatory Science (GSRS19, 24-26 September 2019, Italy). Co-organised by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Global Coalition for Regulatory Science Research (GCRSR), the Summit provided a unique venue for regulators, policy makers, and scientists to exchange views on innovative technologies, methods and regulatory assessments, as well as harmonising strategies to address emerging challenges via global collaborations.
