Researchers reviewed the mechanisms by which microplastics aggregate with and transport environmental contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, finding that their large surface-area-to-volume ratio and hydrophobic chemistry enable them to concentrate persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals and redistribute these toxins across aquatic food webs.
