Effects of plastics and microplastics on aquatic organisms and human health
AI summary Read the abstract
This review paper pulls together existing research showing that tiny plastic particles called microplastics are ending up in fish, mussels, shrimp, and other seafood we eat. Because these creatures absorb microplastics from polluted water, the plastic can travel up the food chain and onto our plates, meaning our growing use of plastic may be quietly working its way into our diets. The authors call for more public awareness and action to reduce plastic pollution before its full health effects on people are better understood.

The environmental effects of microplastics on aquatic ecosystems
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers reviewed the growing body of evidence on how microplastics harm aquatic ecosystems, finding that long-term exposure damages organisms at multiple levels — from delivering toxic chemicals to disrupting reproduction — and calling for urgent action to reduce plastic leakage into waterways.
Plastics and Microplastics: Impacts in the Marine Environment
AI summary Read the abstract
Plastics and microplastics have achieved near-universal distribution in marine environments from surface waters to deep-sea sediments, persisting for decades while fragmenting into increasingly smaller and more biologically available particles. The growing concentration of microplastics in oceans represents a long-term threat to marine biodiversity and the food safety of seafood consumed globally.
The occurrence of microplastic in aquatic environment and toxic effects for organisms
AI summary Read the abstract
"This review synthesized global research on microplastic occurrence in aquatic environments, finding that microplastics are widespread across all water bodies and can trigger inflammation, impair reproduction, and carry co-contaminants such as heavy metals, organic pollutants, and additives into organisms via bioaccumulation. The evidence underscores the need for stricter plastic emissions standards and improved water management, as aquatic microplastic pollution directly cascades into human dietary exposure through seafood and drinking water."
