Summary

This Indonesian study (in Bahasa Indonesia) measured the types and abundance of microplastics in surface water of Kupang Bay during tidal fluctuations, finding microplastics present at varying concentrations depending on tide conditions. The results contribute to documenting microplastic pollution in Indonesian coastal waters.

Plastic waste that ends in the sea has a variety of sizes, one of which is microplastic measuring < 5 mm. The purpose of this study was to identify the types and colors of microplastic at high tide and tide, to know the percentage and abundance of microplastic types and colors at high tide and low tide Sampling microplastics was carried out on 12-13 November 2019, at 10 locations in Kupang Bay waters using manta net with 150 µm mesh size. Destruction of organic matter from the sample using 30% H2O2 solution which was left to stand for seven days. The sample was then filtered and separated from the microplastic using NaCl solution (density 1,202 g/ml). Microplastics identification using a stereo microscope with 20x and 40x magnification and to distinguish microplastic particles from other particles using the Hot Needle Test method. The results of microplastic types found in several locations during high tide and low tide were fibers, fragments, films, and foam. Microplastic colors found were black, white, red, blue and green. The highest overall microplastic abundance was dominated by fiber type at high tide (0.0902 particles/l) and at low tide (0.0669 particles/l). The lowest overall microplastic abundance is foam type at high tide (0,0009 particles/l) and at low tide (0,0001 particles/l). The highest microplastic color found overall was dominated by black at high tide (38.02%) and at low tide (49.25%), while the lowest was green which was found at high tide (2.36%) and at low tide (3.02%).
