Summary

This conceptual study discusses whether clothing care labels could be used as a tool to reduce microfiber pollution from synthetic textiles during washing. Researchers argue that current care label standards do not address microfiber shedding and propose that manufacturers should include microfiber-specific wash instructions. The paper calls for textile industry engagement to integrate microfiber concerns into product labeling.

The purpose of this conceptual study was to provide a critical dialogue about the role of clothing care label for controlling microfiber pollution. Critical dialogues were addressed around (a) current practices of clothing care label and (b) needs to include the microfiber care instruction within clothing care label, which provides insights for textiles and clothing manufactures being responsible to use quality synthetic fibers for clothing production. This study contributes to bridge the gap between consumers’ awareness of microfiber pollution caused by synthetic clothing and current care label that does not include the proper care instruction of microfiber-contained synthetic clothing. Clothing care label needs to contain its care instruction in an inclusive manner, sustaining both clothing quality and the environment. This study initiated a platform for academic and industry professionals to further discuss the way to control microfiber pollution with a proper use of clothing care label.
