First Report of Plastic Fragments in the Lanternfishes Collected from the Sea of Oman
Summary
Researchers documented for the first time that lanternfish — deep-sea fish that migrate vertically each day — collected from the Sea of Oman had ingested plastic fragments. Because lanternfish are abundant and widely eaten by larger predators, their plastic ingestion could serve as a pathway for microplastics to move deeper into marine food webs and eventually into seafood consumed by humans.
