Original data for: Microplastic concentrations, size distribution, and polymer types in the surface waters of a northern European lake
AI summary Read the abstract
This is a dataset containing raw FTIR microscopy and light microscopy measurements of microplastics collected from the surface of Lake Kallavesi in Finland using manta net and pump sampling. It is a research data repository entry supporting a published study on microplastic distribution in a Finnish lake.
Description of the data and files: The data was created in 2018 and opened in 2021. Dataset is an Excel table file MpKallavesiMIF_rawdata.xlsx. The first tab “Sampling” contains coordinates, where the samples were collected and volumes of water per samples. The second tab “Manta FTIR Results” contains light microscopy and FTIR microscopy measurement data from all particles found from the Manta net samples. Similarly, the third tab “Pump FTIR results” contains light microscopy and FTIR microscopy measurement data for particles from pumped samples. The fourth tab “Controls” contains light microscopy and FTIR microscopy measurement data for control samples. The fifth tab “Materials” contains statistics for the shapes (fibers/fragments) and polymer types of the microplastics. Please see the related publication for more details about the methods and results. Creation and processing of the data: Data is created by examining the appearance and chemical composition of the suspected microplastic particles by light microscopy and FTIR microscopy. Correlation coefficients have been calculated between the measured FTIR spectra and a reference library of plastics. In addition to the raw data, the file contains statistics calculated from the raw numbers. Purpose and use of the data: Data is published under Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 license. Data may be useful for comparisons between datasets and meta-analyses of microplastic concentrations in various environments.

This is a dataset of raw sampling and FTIR measurement data supporting a published study on microplastic accumulation in thin stratified layers in the Baltic Sea. It is a research data repository entry rather than a standalone article.
Microplastic concentrations, size distribution, and polymer types in the surface waters of a northern European lake
AI summary Read the abstract
Microplastics were detected in surface waters of a northern European lake, with concentrations, size distributions, and polymer types characterized across multiple sampling sites and seasons. The study adds to growing evidence that even relatively pristine boreal lakes are contaminated with microplastics, likely from atmospheric deposition and tributary inflow.
Microplastic pollution in Kolavai Lake, Tamil Nadu, India: Quantification of plankton-sized microplastics in the surface water of lake
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers surveyed Kolavai Lake in Tamil Nadu, India, and found microplastics at an average of 6.1 particles per liter across the lake's surface water, with higher concentrations near urban and southern zones. The study used FTIR spectroscopy to confirm the chemical identity of particles and examined how microplastic abundance compares to zooplankton density, finding that microplastics were present at levels that could disrupt plankton feeding. These results highlight how even inland freshwater lakes in India are heavily contaminated, with implications for aquatic food chains and the communities that depend on this water.
Assessment of microplastic pollution: occurrence and characterisation in Vesijärvi lake and Pikku Vesijärvi pond, Finland
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers assessed microplastic pollution in Vesijärvi lake and Pikku Vesijärvi pond in Finland during winter, detecting mean concentrations of 395.5 MPs/kg in sediment, 117.1 MPs/L in snow, and 7.8 MPs/L in ice samples, with FTIR imaging used for chemical identification.
