Summary
This chapter reviews biological degradation and bioremediation techniques for removing pharmaceuticals and personal care product chemicals from wastewater, as these compounds are regularly discharged into water sources and harm aquatic ecosystems. Complete removal of these emerging contaminants remains technically challenging and represents an active area of environmental research.
Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) regularly used by humans in their daily lives are an issue of emerging environmental concern. The chemical compounds present in these products are regularly added to our surface and groundwater sources, either through discharge into untreated or partially treated domestic and industrial water, or through runoff from agricultural production, etc. The compounds are present in different concentrations and cause harmful effects on living beings. Many studies have evaluated their effects on animal biodiversity, which can either directly or indirectly affect humans as well. Therefore, their removal from wastewater is essential. However, complete mineralization of these compounds is very difficult to achieve. Various technologies have been proposed and used to remove them from the environment. In this chapter we review bioremediation techniques used for this purpose.
