Microplastics in rime-ice observed at a remote mountain
Summary
This Japanese study collected rime-ice and snow samples from a remote mountain location to detect microplastics in the free troposphere during winter. Microplastics were found at concentrations of 8.34-12.3 million particles per cubic meter in rime-ice, about 10 times higher than in snowpack, with polyethylene fragments under 100 micrometers dominant.
マイクロプラスチック（MPs）は，都市域のみならず，世界最高峰のエベレスト山の雪やマリアナ海溝の最深部の堆積物，北極圏の雪など地球上のあらゆるところで発見されている．しかし，その輸送経路については未知の部分が多い．ここでは，北および西風が卓越する冬季に人為汚染のない自由対流圏にある高山で樹氷と積雪を採取し，MPsの有無についてFTIRイメージングを用いて検証した．その結果，積雪と樹氷中にMPsの存在が明らかになった．樹氷中には，8.34×106 m－3 から12.3×106 m－3 の範囲でMPsが検出され，積雪中には1.34×106 m－3 のMPsが存在した．樹氷中のMPsの濃度は積雪中の約10倍であった．樹氷中のMPsの粒径分布をみると，100 µm以下に90 %以上が存在し，その大部分が断片であった．構成成分はポリエチレン（PE）が主成分であった．
