Modelling approaches used to compose the OECD Global Plastics Outlook Database
Summary
This technical annex describes the modelling methodologies used to construct the OECD Global Plastics Outlook Database, covering estimates of plastics use, waste generation, waste management, and environmental leakage. The database includes estimates of microplastic releases from tire and brake abrasion and other sources.
The Annex presents the methodologies applied to provide the estimates contained in this report and in the OECD Global Plastics Outlook Database.https://doi.org/10.1787/c0821f81-en. These estimates include, plastics use, plastic waste generation, plastic waste management and the environmental impacts of plastics, i.e. 1) leakage to the environment, detailing the macroplastics and microplastics fractions; 2) leakage to aquatic environments; 3) particulate matter emissions from tyre and brake abrasion; and 4) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
