Implementasi Demokrasi Lingkungan Hidup sebagai Upaya Mengurangi Timbulan Sampah Plastik di Lautan Indonesia
Summary
This article examines environmental democracy as a governance framework for reducing marine plastic litter in Indonesia, proposing that meaningful public participation, transparent information access, and judicial accountability mechanisms can complement regulatory approaches in addressing the country's significant contribution to ocean plastic pollution.
As a contributor to marine pollution, the existence of marine plastic litter can potentially disrupt sustainable marine ecosystems in the long term. This article intends to offer the implementation of environmental democracy ideas to relieve marine plastic itter. Environmental democracy is a system of government with the highest sovereignty on the people and places human interests side by side and in harmony with environmental (sustainability) interests. Environmental democracy’s idea as an effort to reduce marine plastic litter in Indonesia can be implemented through, i.e. providing reliable, up-to-date, and accessible information about marine plastic litter; providing active public participation in policies or regulations formulation; the availability of access to justice; and strengthening society’s rights to reduce marine plastic litter. These four components, even though they are read as procedural, are essential in reducing marine plastic litter because the elements of environmental democracy have not been entirely appropriately implemented at the practical level.
