Separation of Microplastics and Nanoplastics from Various Environments and Associated Challenges
Summary
This book chapter reviews separation techniques for isolating microplastics and nanoplastics from aquatic, atmospheric, and sediment samples, including filtration, sieving, density separation, elutriation, and froth flotation. It discusses the limitations and challenges associated with each approach for different environmental matrices.
Once the sample collection process ends, different sample preservation and separation methods can be used for plastics but the separation of various plastics from environmental matrices is still challenging. This chapter comprehensively reviews various techniques like filtration, sieving, density-based separations, elutriation, oil film formation, and froth flotation for the separation of microplastics and nanoplastics from aquatic, atmospheric, and sediment samples. Furthermore, limitations and associated challenges with each technique are also discussed.
