Summary

This book chapter provides an overview of national laws, regulations, and policy tools that govern macroplastics, mesoplastics, microplastics, and nanoplastics across countries. It reviews legally binding instruments including bans and restrictions on specific plastic products, arguing that coordinated multilateral action is required to address plastic pollution effectively.

Study Type Environmental

In prospects of plastic pollution control, the solutions are complex, multilateral and transboundary. So the global response must be holistic and dynamic, requiring coordinated action by diverse stakeholders at the regional, national and international levels. This chapter provides an overview of countries’ progress in passing laws and regulations that limit the manufacture, import, sale, use and disposal of selected macroplastics, mesoplastics, microplastics and nanoplastics with environmental impacts. The current chapter also reviewed national legally binding instruments that include bans and restrictions, taxes and levies, encouraging reuse and recycling, and promoting alternatives to plastic products. Additionally, attempts have been made to address all types of plastic crises globally, from wellhead extraction to ocean pollution.
