Microplastics in Soil: Impacts on Ecosystems, Potential Sources and Analytical Research Methods (review)
Original title: Microplastics in Soil: Impacts on Ecosystems, Potential Sources and Analytical Research Methods (review)
AI summary Read the abstract
This Russian-language review examines microplastic contamination in soils, covering potential sources, ecological impacts on soil organisms, and analytical detection methods. It highlights that soils may be more contaminated than aquatic environments yet have received comparatively less scientific attention.
The ubiquitous use of plastics has led to an increase in the amount of plastic debris that accumulates in the environment and breaks down into small fragments, including <5 mm microplastics. Over the past decade, an increasing amount of research has focused on the potential hazards and methods for analyzing plastic particles in the aquatic environment. However, soils can be much more heavily contaminated, and little is known about the accumulation of microplastics in soil, possible sources, consequences, interactions of plastic particles with soil organisms, and effective methods of analysis. This article provides an overview aimed at presenting the available information on the potential environmental impacts of microplastics, possible sources and routes of entry into soils, and proposed methods for the analytical control of this pollutant. The review allows to outline the main methodological problems, tasks and prospects for research in this area.

A review of microplastics in the soil environment
AI summary Read the abstract
This review summarizes the current state of knowledge about microplastic contamination in soil environments, covering sources, distribution, and effects on soil organisms and ecosystems. The study highlights that while aquatic microplastic research is more advanced, soil contamination poses significant but understudied risks to terrestrial ecosystems and food production.
Microplastic contamination in soil environment – a review
AI summary Read the abstract
This review examines the sources, transport, degradation, and ecological impacts of microplastic contamination in soil environments. The study suggests that soil acts as both a major sink for microplastics and a conduit transporting them to aquatic systems, and that microplastics can negatively affect soil organisms and biogeochemistry, underscoring the need for more research on terrestrial microplastic pollution.
Recent advances on ecological effects of microplastics on soil environment
AI summary Read the abstract
This review summarizes recent advances in understanding the ecological effects of microplastics on soil environments. Researchers found that soils serve as major sinks for microplastics, which can alter soil properties, affect plant growth, disrupt soil microbial communities, and interact with other pollutants. The study highlights that terrestrial microplastic pollution may be even more pervasive than aquatic contamination and warrants greater research attention.
A review of microplastics in soil: Occurrence, analytical methods, combined contamination and risks
AI summary Read the abstract
This review provides a comprehensive overview of microplastic pollution in soil ecosystems, covering sources, detection methods, and ecological impacts. Researchers found that soils are major reservoirs for microplastics, and the study highlights how combined contamination with other pollutants like heavy metals and pesticides may amplify risks to soil organisms and food safety.
