The impact of microplastics on meiofauna

Original title: The impact of microplastics on meiofauna

AI summary Read the abstract

This Croatian-language review examines the impact of microplastics on meiofauna—the small invertebrates that form a critical component of benthic food webs. The review covers how microplastics enter marine environments, their ubiquitous distribution, and the direct and synergistic harmful effects on meiofaunal organisms observed so far. Given projections of increasing plastic pollution, the authors stress the urgency of understanding microplastic impacts on this understudied but ecologically important group.

This Croatian review described the origins, physical and chemical properties, and ecological impacts of microplastics on marine organisms, explaining how plastics smaller than 5 mm accumulate in the ocean and cause harm through ingestion and chemical contamination. The work provides a comprehensive introduction to the microplastics problem for marine science audiences.

Effects of microplastics pollution on the abundance and composition of interstitial meiofauna

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers found that microplastic accumulation in beach sediments negatively affected the abundance and community composition of meiofauna at lower intertidal levels on urban Colombian beaches, with microplastics explaining 39% of community variation in the most heavily impacted zone.

Mikroplastika u morskom okolišu

AI summary Read the abstract

This Croatian review summarizes the growing problem of microplastics in marine environments, noting that plastic fragments enter digestive systems of marine organisms, concentrate toxins, and transfer through food chains to eventually reach humans. The paper also highlights the need for standardized methods to monitor microplastic distribution and assess health risks.
