Feasibility Study of the Use of Concrete Blocks Produced From Plastic Marine Garbage for Use in Civil Construction
Summary
Researchers investigated the feasibility of producing concrete blocks incorporating plastic waste collected from marine and coastal environments, testing blocks with varying proportions of recycled plastic as a partial aggregate replacement in civil construction applications. The study assessed the mechanical and physical properties of the resulting composite blocks, evaluating whether marine plastic garbage could be valorized as a construction material while reducing environmental plastic loads.
<title>Abstract</title> The search for development in an economically sustainable and ecologically correct way is an objective of modern society that has been investing in products that reduce their impacts on the environment, especially in relation to the use of plastic, which is very harmful to nature due to its toxicity and time of stay in the middle. The present study aims to analyze the feasibility of producing blocks made of concrete with different amounts of plastic taken from coastal and estuarine areas. After analysis in the laboratory, it was found that the blocks with 5% of plastic have good compressive strength, are lighter, there was an increase in the acidity of the sample, a decrease in the density of the block, a reduction in the flexural strength, a reduction in the compressive strength. The prototype with 5% of plastic by mass is efficient for the construction of single-story houses, meeting the minimum requirements of normative resistance, allowing the shielding of the plastic in the block, reducing the impact on the environment.
