Streamlining the Construction Industry Driven Plastic Waste as Building Material through Possibility of Circular Lifecycle

This study examines the potential for integrating plastic waste from India's construction and demolition sector into a circular economy framework as a reusable building material. The research maps relationships between original plastic material properties and reuse potential, and reviews barriers limiting circular utilization in the construction industry. The authors identify pathways to reduce landfill dependency by keeping plastic construction waste in productive use within the supply chain.
Construction and Demolition waste is an emerging issue in a booming construction economy as India’s. The amount of increasing waste due to construction industry is ending up in landfills and incinerator which deteriorates the environment in many aspects like air, water and soil pollution. This study aims to draw attention towards the plastic’s possible circular lifecycle within the construction industry as it is a non-perishable component of waste generated and highlight the current scenario within the field regarding this increasing menace including the problems faced in the industry which result in limited circular utilisation. The research first develops relationship between original and recycled plastic products in the construction industry followed by primary surveys and case studies to understand the short-comings of actual field. As a result the study would formulate a matrix that graphically represent the recyclability of various plastic types along with the measures to increase its possibility to result in a greener construction practise.
