Summary

This chapter reviews statistical subsampling models for microplastic analysis, examining factors that affect the representativeness of optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy methods, and provides guidance on selecting objective lenses and statistical approaches to maximize analysis accuracy and efficiency.

This chapter reviews subsampling models proposed for microplastic analysis for their statistical representativeness with simulated data. Visual examination with optical microscopy is the most common analysis method. We explore factors to consider when selecting an objective lens to maximize the speed and accuracy of analysis once a statistically representative subsample is selected. Raman spectroscopy is one of the popular technologies to identify the chemistry of microplastics and is often coupled with optical microscopy as Raman microscopy. We provide an example of quantitative analysis of microplastics based on statistical analysis using Raman microscopy.
